MAIN TRAIL -
Percurso do Vale da Teixeira

NAME OF INTEREST - Granitic shapes

CONCEPT - Geological Heritage

From this point it is possible to see one of the most important characteristics of the Serra do Gerês: its intense network of fracturing.
After descending into and the further we walk along the valley of the Teixeira, the more easily we can see the valley sides and spot the larger scale moulded granite shapes: the Bornhardts and Castle Koppie (castle tors). Bornhardts are dome shaped granitic outcrops with steep sides, exposing bare rock over most of their surface, whilst Castle Koppies take on a castellated shape with dominant orthogonal and vertical fractures.
Also visible on the valley sides are other granitic forms, albeit of smaller size: Tors or stacked blocks (distinguished from castle koppies through their smaller dimension) and the chaos of boulders.
