MAIN TRAIL -
Percurso da Serra Amarela

NAME OF INTEREST - Granitic shapes (tors)

CONCEPT - Geological Heritage

At the point we have now reached it is possible to see a landform that is commonly associated with granites that is known as a ‘tor’ or stacked block. Tors are granitic blocks which are stacked one on top of another, with rounded edges that respect the fracture system which led to their origin. The present shape of these blocks originated below the land surface and involved alteration processes on the granite (alteration layer). Following the removal of the materials that resulted from this alteration, the harder and more resistant blocks remained as the granitic outcrops which are now such a feature of the rocky landscape that surrounds us at this point.
