Percurso da Serra Amarela

NAME OF INTEREST - Oak wood

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

This oak wood, situated at 950 metres altitude is dominated by the Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica), but there is nevertheless a significant number of common oak (Quercus robur) (habitat 9230). These mixed woodlands have a respectable biodiversity but even so those dominated by the common oak (at a lower altitude) have an even greater floral biodiversity. Some species present here include holly (Ilex aquifolium), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), ivy (Hedera helix), dogtooth violet (Erythronium dens-canis) and the wood anemone (Anemone trifolia subsp. albida).
In the case of animal life we can come across some species that are also present in other habitats, such as the wolf (Canis lupus) deer (Capreolus capreolus), but also many others that are more specific to oak woods, such as the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), coal tit (Parus ater) or common jay (Garrulus glandarius).
