NAME OF INTEREST - Oak wood

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage


This habitat is dominated by the common or pendunculate oak (Quercus robur) and Pyrenean oak (Q. pyrenaica). It also contains species of high floristic value such as the holly (Ilex aquifolium), crab apple (Malus sylvestris) and angels’ tears narcissus (Narcissus triandrus subsp. triandrus).
Amongst the fauna associated with oak woods we can make reference to various mammal species such as the wolf (Canis lupus), deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild cat (Felis silvestris), pine martin (Martes martes), wild boar (Sus scrofa), genet (Genetta genetta), beech martin (Martes foina) and the polecat (Mustela putorius). Frequent amongst bird species are, for example, the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), European jay (Accipiter nisus), blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), hobby (Falco subuteo) and tawny owl (Strix aluco). Amongst reptiles can be found the green lizard (Lacerta lepida), large psammodromus lizard (Psammodromus algirus) and the smooth snake (Coronella austriaca).
It is important to emphasise that this habitat contributes to the environment in a total of 17 ways, amongst which: fixing of CO2, climate regulation, prevention of catastrophic phenomena, stabilising and formation of soil, elimination and recycling of residues, encouraging biodiversity, production of foodstuff and wood, firewood, grazing, amongst others. The principal threats to this habitat include fire, woodcutting and grazing.
