CONCEPT - Natural Heritage


These are low, dry scrub areas dominated by Portuguese heather (Erica umbellata), yellow gorse (E. australis), prickled broom (Pterospartum tridentatum) or dwarf gorse (Ulex minor). This sub-type of habitat 4030 is normally associated with an abundance of acidic rocks, high levels of precipitation and flash burning.
This habitat is rich in fauna because of its open areas that are used for feeding. It is possible to find here the wolf (Canis lupus), deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild cat (Felis silvestris) and wild boar (Sus scrofa). As far as bird-life is concerned, it is possible to find the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) and the crag martin (Ptyonoprogne rupestris). Amongst reptiles of particular note are the green lizard (Lacerta lepida), the large psammodromus lizard (Psammodromus algirus), Lataste’s viper (Vipera latastei) and the Seoane’s viper (Vipera seoanei).
