MAIN TRAIL -
Percurso Pé de Cabril

NAME OF INTEREST - Cancelo (gateway)

CONCEPT - Cultural Heritage

At Cancelo we can see and try to understand how grazing was organised in these hills. The gateway or Cancelo is a narrow opening, also known as a dog’s gate, through which could pass people and smaller animals, but not large animals such as cattle. This opening is situated in a wall, the wall of Cancelo, whose purpose is to limit the area of grazing. Thus, as with many walls spread across these hills, the wall of Cancelo was used to contain the grazing animals within a certain area, also preventing the animals from Campo Gerês mixing with those of Vilar da Veiga.
