MAIN TRAIL -
Percurso Lamas-Peneda

NAME OF INTEREST - View over Peneda

CONCEPT - Landscape Interest

From this splendid viewpoint looking towards the Peneda valley one can see the small village of Peneda nestling in the valley alongside the banks of the River Peneda (in the Parish of Gavieira).
Beyond the agricultural areas and small houses one can see, outstanding in the landscape, the Sanctuary of Senhora da Peneda, our journey’s end, which is fully described at that point.
Near the Sanctuary one can also see some larger buildings, these are the “quarteis” (barracks) which were built for the purpose of sheltering the many pilgrims who come every year, as a symbol of their faith, to the Sanctuary.
Above the Sanctuary there is a smooth granite outcrop, the “Fraga da Meadhina” (1009 metres high). The highest point Penameda (1215 metres) is one of the highest points in the Serra da Peneda.
