These small artistic and religious shrines are elements of homage to the dead and are found far more frequently in the north of the country than elsewhwere. They are usually found near the path, on the road, by streams and at cross-roads. Occasionally they can be seen in niches on the walls of houses. The styles and dates are varied. The “Alminhas” (little shrines of Lagarto) can be seen on the side of the road that joins Lamas de Mouro to Peneda. They are made of granite in the shape of a small chapel and can be reached by a small “calçada” . In this place worship, flowers and candles are always present.
