NAME OF INTEREST - Heather-Gorse areas 2

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

At this point one can see the inland Galician-Portuguese heather-gorse areas (habitat 4030pt2), part of the European “dry” marshes. In a more generic way one can say that these are dry brushwoods, constituted mostly by common gorse (Ulex europaeus), that “paints” the landscape with a yellow colour from February to April. One can also see dwarf gorse (Ulex minor) and several kinds of heather (Erica sp. pl.) and grasses, such as Agrostis curtisii and Pseudarrhenatherum longifolium. This brushwood generally results from the degeneration of oak-groves by fire. Still, they possess a significant biodiversity. The following species of animals are a small sample of what can be seen here: the boar (Sus scrofa), fox (Vulpes vulpes), Dartford warbler (Sylvia undata), stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Montagu’s harrier (Circus pygargus) and Lataste’s viper (Vipera latastei).
