NAME OF INTEREST - View over Peneda

CONCEPT - Landscape Interest

This excellent viewpoint looks over the valley of Peneda. Flowing through the valley runs the River Peneda, where, on the banks of the river, the small village of Peneda is situated (Parish of Gavieira). Besides the fields and small houses, one can catch sight of the monumental Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda, where the route ends.
Notice also the larger buildings situated near the Sanctuary, these are the “quarteis” (barracks) that were built for the purpose of housing the many pilgrims who make a pilgrimage every year, as a symbol of their faith, to this Sanctuary.
Above the Sanctuary there is a “smooth” granite outcrop, the Fraga da Meadinha” (1009 metres high). The highest point “Penameda” (1215 metres), is one of the highest points in the “Serra da Peneda”.
