NAME OF INTEREST - Humid Heather-gorse areas

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

This is a habitat that has as main vegetation the cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix) and the dwarf gorse (Ulex minor), either associated to “lameirinha” (E. Ciliaris) or not. The common heather (Calluna vulgaris) and species of the genus “Genista” are also usual. This habitat is very important in regulating the water cycle, being also a refuge for biodiversity (rare vascular plants Gentiana pneumonanthe and rare Lycaenidae - gossamer-winged butterflies- e.g. Maculinea alcon). One can also see insectivore species such as the common sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and the butterwort (Pinguicula lusitanica). Concerning fauna one can see several bird species and also amphibia, such as the Iberian newt (Triturus boscai), marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus), Iberian frog (Rana iberica) and the European tree frog (Hyla arborea).
