NAME OF INTEREST - Mushroom shaped rock

CONCEPT - Geological Heritage

At this point we can see a rather strangely shaped granite boulder. Its form reminds one of a mushroom, narrower at the base than the top, leading to the name of a pedunculate or mushroom shaped rock.
Amongst the range of typical forms that granite may assume, pedunculates are considered to be small-scaled features. Their origin is due generally to more active alteration at the base of the feature, very often related to the accumulation of moisture. The mushroom shape may, furthermore, result from the stresses that build up at the base of a round boulder, which may lead to the release of splinters around the base.
