MAIN TRAIL -
Percurso dos Bicos

NAME OF INTEREST - Meadow with trumpet daffodils

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

Alongside the Branda dos Bicos are meadows used by cattle and ponies (garranos), that remain clear of scrub because of grazing and also burning. The high altitude grazing meadows, having high soil moisture levels, fall within the priority conservation habitat no. 6230. These meadows are dominated by grasses, but also contain other plants, amongst which feature two species of narcissus: the hoop petticoat daffodil (Narcissus bulbocodium), a small narcissus protected Europe-wide, and the wild daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus subsp. nobilis), the largest narcissus present in Portugal. The latter only exists naturally in the north of the Iberian peninsula and has one of the highest levels of European protection. It is a rare species in Portugal, this particular population being the smallest in the National Park. For this reason it is essential that you only observe the plant and that you do not collect even a single flower, since doing this may threaten this small population.
As well as cattle, many other animals make use of the meadows as a source of food, such as the rabbit (Orictolagus cuniculus), Lusitanian pine vole (Microtus lusitanicus), common partridge (Alectoris rufa), meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) and the stonechat (Saxicola torquata).
