NAME OF INTEREST - Peaty Area

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

This peaty area could potentially be included under the 7140 (peat bogs) and 7150 (depressions in peaty substrates) habitats. It is an area with an accumulation of peat, which results from the incomplete decomposition of organic matter, due to adverse environmental conditions (excess water, high acidity and lack of oxygen in the soil). It has thick cover of moss (principally Sphagnum sp. pl.), reeds, and cyperaceae and insectivore species such as roundleaf sundew (Drosera rodundifolia). The latter species captures insects with sticky leaf glands and obtains from these the minerals that are lacking in the ground.
Amphibians are by far the dominant fauna found here, in particular species of salamanders and frogs.
It is worth noting that such peaty areas are rare in Portugal, this being the southernmost limit of their distribution. One of their principal threats is drainage.
