NAME OF INTEREST - Gorse heath 2

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

At this point we can observe non-littoral Luso-Galician gorse heath (habitat 4030pt2) which is included under the heading of dry European heathland. The simplest way to describe these are as dry scrub dominated by European gorse (Ulex europaeus), which colours the countryside in yellow from February to April. We can also find bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), asphedels (Asphodelus sp.) and grasses such as Agrostis curtisii and Agrostis truncatula.
Generally speaking, this type of scrub results from the destruction of oak woods through fire. Despite this, dry scrub areas provide high levels of faunal diversity, in which the following species are but examples: wild boar (Sus scrofa), fox (Vulpes vulpes), Dartford warbler (Sylvia undata), stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Montagu’s harrier (Circus pygargus) and Latastie’s viper (Vipera latastei).
