NAME OF INTEREST - Waterside Birchwood

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

This birchwood, contrary to the one seen previously, is situated alongside a watercourse and therefore falls within the riverine birchwood habitat (habitat 91E0pt2). It is included in the alluvial ash and alder forests and as such constitutes a priority conservation habitat.
As can be seen, this birchwood contains large Iberian white birches (Betula celtiberica), but is not continuous (probably as a result of fires). Other species to be observed are the narrow leaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), grey willow (Salix atrocinerea) and ivy (Hedera helix).
Amongst the typical animals of this habitat can be found the otter (Lutra lutra), long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus), dipper (Cinclus cinclus), Iberian emerald lizard (Lacerta schreiberi), Lusitanian salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica) and, in the river itself the Iberian nase (Chondrostoma polylepis).
