MAIN TRAIL -
Planalto Castro Laboreiro

NAME OF INTEREST - Humid heather-gorse areas

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

In this habitat there is mostly cross-leaved heather (Erica tetralix) and dwarf gorse (Ulex minor), with or without “lameirinha” (E.ciliaris) associated with it. Ling (Calluna vulgaris) is also usual, as well as species of the Genista type.
Humid brushwood is important in regulating the water cycle, also being useful as a refuge for biodiversity (rare vascular plants Gentiana pneumonanthe and rare Lycaenidae- gossamer-winged butterflies- e.g. Maculinea alcon).
There can also be seen insectivore species such as the common sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and the pinguicola (butterwort) (Pinguicula lusitanica).
With respect to fauna one can see several bird species, such as the whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), and also several amphibians, such as the Iberian Newt (Triturus boscai), the marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus), the Iberian frog (Rana iberica) and the European tree frog (Hyla arborea).
