Montalegre Gate

Landscape

Entering the Park in Paradela we marvel at the summits and plateaus of Serra do Gerês reflected in the lake of Paradela dam. We rest in the shade of the woods that surround the Gate of Paradela. We visit the “fojos” (ancient stone walls for wolf trapping) in Fafião and Paradela and admire the monumental oaks in the center of Pincães village. Leaving in the opposite direction we find the watermills in Paredes village, learning how the ancients use the force of water. We continue to the Mourela plateau in search of the communitarian villages of Tourém and Pitões das Júnias (the highest village in Portugal). We hike the Pitões das Júnias Trail finding a hidden monastery in the valley. Here we can also find the Gerês iris, the Iberian adder and some of the most important peat bogs in the park.
