Romeiros Route

The “Romeiros’” route starts at the chapel of “Senhor da Boa Morte”, in the Inverneira – (winter quarters) of Ameijoeira (Parish of Castro Laboreiro, Municipality of Melgaço), and ends at the Sanctuary of “Nossa Senhora da Peneda”, in Peneda (Parish of Gavieira, Municipality of Arcos de Valdevez). This route is about 10,5 kilometres long, and passes through the River Castro Laboreiro valley, known as “Vale das Inverneiras”, continuing on through the River Peneda valley and then crossing part of Peneda’s mountains. This route can only be followed on foot. We recommend that you allow 8 hours to follow the entire route and to appreciate the suggested points of interest (there are 30 described in all) related to natural, cultural, geological and scenic features of importance.
The route is graded medium to high difficulty and is therefore recommended only for people who are physically fit and with hillwalking experience.
There is no guarantee of being able to replenish water along the route (springs and water fountains are seasonal).
